Buddhist Temples, Tori Gates, Shrines, Snow monsters
9-Day Photographic Adventure
Introduction
Situated at the far northern part of mainland Japan, Aomori is known for receiving the highest snowfall in the country each year. During our time here we will visit geothermal ponds, forests with tori gates, lakes, Buddhist temples and tori gate shrines and snow monsters. Expect different weather and lighting conditions to give places atmosphere and we’re all set for a continuation from my Hokkaido tour.
Arrival & Departure
Please arrive in Aomori on the 19th of January.
Departure is on the 27th of January from Aomori Airport.
Small Group Size
I’m running this tour with a small group size of 6 participants.
Required Fitness Level
Easy to occassionally Demanding
Most locations are very close to the car, but we will require the use of snow shoes to access many of the places.
Anyone of regular fitness and with regular mobility should have no difficulty with this trip, but it is important for me to set the right level of expectations: the weather in January can be extremely cold with temperatures down to -17ºC and beyond. Coupled with occassional snow storms and occasional very deep snow, this tour can be at times more physically demanding than a standard photo tour.
Arrival & Departure
• Arrive: Aomori 19th of January 2026 before 5pm• Depart: Aomori Airport 27th of January 2026(last evening is the 26th)
Please note that Aomori has very high snow levels due to regular snow storms. I'd advise arriving a day earlier to Aomori to cover for flight cancellations. There are frequent flights to/from Tokyo Haneda airport via JAL Airlines.
